The head of the unity government in Libya, Abdul Hamid Al-Dabaiba, said on Tuesday that his government “will be the last transitional stage” in the country.
Al-Dabaiba said in an exclusive interview with Sky News Arabia, on the sidelines of the World Government Summit held in Dubai under the slogan “Foreseeing the Governments of the Future”: “We (the unity government) have come to be the last transitional stage in Libya.”
He added: “We will go to the next stage, which is the constitutional basis for organizing elections, and then we will begin the elections.”
Al-Dabaiba said, “Any ideas from the House of Representatives that would include continuing the situation as it is and discussing a new transitional phase, we told them: No.”
He stressed: “We said that this is the end of the transitional phase and we will enter the electoral phase, and we are ready to hold elections in accordance with the constitution.”
The Prime Minister confirmed that the Legislative Council, composed of the House of Representatives and the House of State, is working to draft constitutional laws or the constitution in preparation for holding elections.
He continued: “Until now, the constitution has not been drawn up. We talk a lot regarding the constitutional rule, and today, if there were a rule upon which election laws were built that would be fair for all Libyans, we would accept anyone who runs in the elections.”
Al-Dabaiba said: “We demand fair laws that produce fair elections whose results are accepted by all parties.”
The dispute in Libya has so far prevented writing a constitution and holding elections, due to the country’s division between two authorities in the east and the west.
The activities of the second day of the World Government Summit in Dubai will host global discussions and dialogues aimed at anticipating the formation of governments and integrating modern technologies in the formation of sectors.
The Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, is scheduled to participate in a key session entitled “Arab Governments and Artificial Intelligence.”
The second day’s activities will also witness a speech by the summit’s guest of honour, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
