Images of relief workers working in Libya following the floods which devastated the town of Derna, killing more than 11,000 people.

AFRICA – The toll is appalling and makes these floods one of the worst humanitarian disasters in recent years. The United Nations, citing the Libyan Red Crescent, announced on the night of Saturday to Sunday September 17 that at least 11,300 people died and 10,000 remain missing in Derna, in eastern Libya.

“These numbers are expected to rise as search and rescue teams work around the clock”warned OCHA, the UN agency responsible for humanitarian affairs.

It was storm Daniel which hit the country on Monday which caused the tragedy. It led to the rupture of two dams upstream of this town of 100,000 inhabitants; it is as if a tsunami had then been triggered along the wadi which crosses Derna, sweeping away everything in its path.

Rescue work is very complicated in this region where political chaos has reigned in the country since the end of Maoummar Gaddafi’s regime in 2011. The chances of finding survivors are now tiny.

On the relief front, the military hospital that France has deployed should be operational this Sunday following a third plane was able to land overnight.
