Libya.. the “international plan” on the meeting table of Haftar and Bathily

The Commander-in-Chief of the Libyan Armed Forces, Field Marshal General Staff Khalifa Haftar, met with the United Nations envoy to Libya, Abdullah Bathily, on Monday, at the General Command headquarters in Benghazi, to review the “international plan.”

Abdullah Bathily briefed Khalifa Haftar on the “international plan of the United Nations mission in the next stage, which will lead to the holding of presidential and parliamentary elections.”

The importance of supporting the efforts of the House of Representatives and the state to complete the constitutional rule was emphasized.

On Saturday, Bathily called on the House of Representatives and the Council of State in Libya to “deal in good faith” to reach a roadmap for the elections by mid-June.

He added, in a press conference in Tripoli, during his clarifications regarding his initiative to hold the Libyan elections, “This new commitment will put the two councils to a test, and they will be responsible before Libya and the international community.”“.

He also praised what he described as the “rapid pace” with which the House of Representatives and the state adopted the 13th constitutional amendment, and their agreement to assign a committee of 6 members from each of them to discuss electoral laws..

On this point, the international envoy added: “Better late than never,” pointing out that the new “6 + 6” committee, if it works at the same speed, can come up with a constitutional basis for the implementation of the elections, which would represent real progress and restore confidence in the two chambers. It enables the Commission to hold elections before the end of 2023.
