Li Qiang appointed Premier of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China

Deputies of the National People’s Congress approved the appointment of Li Qiang, member of the Standing Committee of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, as Premier of the State Council. He was nominated by Xi Jinping, who was re-elected to the post of President of the PRC the day before, on March 10.

Li Qiang will replace Li Keqiang, who served as premier for a maximum possible two terms of five years. Li Qiang, 63, joined the Standing Committee of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China in October 2022. For almost 30 years he has worked in various positions at the Supreme People’s Court. In 2012, he was appointed deputy secretary of the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China.

The National People’s Congress also appointed Generals Zhang Youxia and He Weidong as vice-chairmen of the Central Military Council, reports “Xinhua”. The council itself was previously again headed by Xi Jinping. Liu Jinguo, who previously held the position of deputy head, has been appointed head of the State Supervisory Committee. Zhang Jun became the chairman of the Supreme People’s Court, before that he was the Prosecutor General of the Supreme People’s Procuratorate. His position in the Prosecutor General’s Office was taken by the former mayor of Shanghai, Ying Yong.
