One day in 2011, Professor Zhang Weimin of the Film Department of the University of San Francisco accidentally encountered a batch of 16mm film films that had been dusty for a long time. It was a documentary shot in 1967. The protagonist of the documentary was the great painter Zhang Daqian. From then on, Professor Zhang and Zhang Daqian formed an indissoluble bond. She spent twelve years on her own in more than 20 countries in Asia, Europe and South America, traveling thousands of miles to track down Zhang Daqian following he left his homeland. His traces were filmed into the touching documentary “Thousand Miles Away”.
Zhang Daqian left the mainland following 1949. Instead of moving to Hong Kong or Taiwan like many people fleeing the war, he took his family to South America and settled in Mendoza, Argentina. Two years later, he moved to Brazil, built a garden and built a house, and lived in the famous “Bade Garden” for nearly twenty years.
During those days, although he realized that he was in a paradise in his heart, he never broke off his connection with the world. He traveled around Europe and communicated extensively with Western artists, which not only allowed him to learn from the best of others, introduce new ones, but also promote his painting skills. Chinese art has opened Westerners’ eyes to Chinese paintings.
The documentary “Ten Thousand Miles Away” tracks Daqian’s previously forgotten experience, which is very precious. During twelve years of tracking and filming, Zhang Weimin searched for written, historical and video materials regarding Zhang Daqian from all over the world, and interviewed more than a hundred relevant people, including Zhang Daqian’s children, relatives, friends and disciples (eight of whom are now deceased), and shot The next moment has become eternity. The film will premiere at the Palace Museum in Hong Kong on December 8. More than a dozen family members of Zhang Daqian’s family will fly in from all over the world to watch the ceremony.
This documentary film is carefully directed by the director, the editing is unconventional, and the narration is written and read by the director himself. It is full of emotion and eloquent, making the story even more touching. The two executive producers are Zhu Jiayan and former director of the Hong Kong Museum of Art Szeto Yuen-kit. They can be called an artistic director and an academic director. They complement each other in art and academic aspects and are meticulous. The film not only tells the story of “a thousand years in five hundred years”, but also interweaves the modern history of China. It is a bit of admiration and a bit of sigh. It brings a great master to life, and it is worthy of the director’s twelve years of hard work.
