State Governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner visited the scene on Saturday after a severe storm hit the Holabrunn region last Friday night. More than 100 millimeters of rain fell in a short period of time last night. The road was washed out, partially eroded and had to be closed. The water level was as high as one meter in some places. Train traffic between Hollabrunn and Göllersdorf is also interrupted (note: the blockade has now been lifted). The “Augustwiesn” event site in Holabrunn had to be evacuated, but the festival has now restarted. The urban area of Holabrun was declared a disaster area by the district government today, and today and Saturday are all clean-up operations. A total of 102 fire departments, 167 vehicles and 731 firefighters were deployed that night and today (Saturday).
After briefing the emergency services on the situation, the governor said: “A big thank you to the hundreds of comrades and the many volunteers of the fire department who are on duty 24 hours a day and do the best job.” The problem, she said, is that “no one was harmed”, He described the efforts of the fire department and volunteers as “a signal of our Lower Austrian solidarity and unity in difficult circumstances.”
The exact amount of damage can only be estimated in the coming days and weeks, but regional governments expect losses to be in the single million figures, the governor said. However, Mikkel-Leitner said: “As for Lower Austria, we will support the region and will release funds from the disaster relief fund.”
