In the future, individual municipalities will not be able to re-dedicate operating areas of more than 2 hectares – this will only be possible with mandatory cooperation
St. Pölten (OTS) – “Protecting our soil is protecting our livelihood. It is therefore in everyone’s interest to reclaim as little land as necessary. For this reason, we have already tightened up the spatial planning law several times in recent years and have been able to successfully slow down the take-up of land despite population and economic growth. With today’s decision in the Lower Austrian state parliament, we are going one step further and prohibiting the rezoning of operational areas with more than two hectares. In the future, such dedications can only be made with the obligatory cooperation of several communities,” said LH Deputy. Stephan Pernkopf and the spokesman for economics, spatial planning and building regulations, LAbg. Kurt Hackl, in unison.
“With this tightening of the Spatial Planning Act, we are also ensuring more togetherness and less competition between communities when it comes to setting up new businesses. Inter-municipal cooperation is already a successful model in many areas that is efficient and economical. Spatial planning experts also praise this approach, which will distribute revenues and burdens more equally among the communities. The fact that our approaches to protecting the soil work can be seen when you look at the sealed areas in the permanent settlement area: with a share of 7.36 percent, we are in second best place behind Burgenland. Across Austria, an average of 9.1 percent of the permanent settlement area is sealed,” said LH Deputy. Pernkopf.
“Our entrepreneurs need development opportunities in the regions. We must not make the mistake of playing one once morest the other. We must protect our soils as best as possible for future generations, but at the same time we must not forget to provide the space to accommodate our growing region. By committing to intermunicipal operating areas for larger rezonings, we are creating the legal framework,” says LAbg. Hackl.
