LG’s rollable smartphone is amazing and you’ll never get it

A hands-on view of the LG Rollable shows just how much this rollable smartphone might have wowed the crowds. However, this project was canceled since the brand left the sector.

LG no longer makes smartphones. Despite a long and rich history in this sector, the brand had lost its luster and resigned itself to stopping the costs in 2021. Nevertheless, before throwing in the towel, the Korean manufacturer still had a few projects in the pipeline, to like the LG Rollable, an expandable smartphone with a rollable screen that he had teased.

Understand that this is not a foldable smartphone, but a phone whose flexible screen rolls up and down thanks to a motorized system to offer two display sizes. The smartphone can therefore turn into a tablet, but it does not unfold to do that. For comparison, it is very similar to the concept of the Oppo X 2021 which had already left a strong impression on us.

Recently, a Korean videographer — “뻘짓연구소” — posted a hands-on LG Rollable on YouTube.

We thus see the tester manipulate the phone and switch from the 6.8-inch smartphone to the 7.4-inch tablet form (at a ratio of 1.5:1) just by sliding three fingers to the right of the screen.

An attractive expandable smartphone

Through this getting started video, the LG Rollable knows how to be very attractive. The animations of the interface are fluid to ensure the transition from smartphone format to tablet format. In the settings, for example, this allows a second column to appear or disappear smoothly. Beyond that, the fully unrolled slab really seems to improve reading comfort. However, for videos in landscape mode, the classic compromise of fairly thick black bands remains relevant.

Overall, a good mastery emerges from this grip and this makes this concept all the more frustrating since it has simply been abandoned. Nevertheless, LG can still take advantage of this aborted project to show all its know-how. Thus, if the manufacturer may never try to sell smartphones once more, it can always forge partnerships with other brands looking for a quality supplier to launch such a product.

Moreover, note that the LG Rollable taken in hand in this video is equipped with a Snapdragon 888 associated with 12 GB and 256 GB of storage. It also benefits from a Poled slab. On the photo side, there are two cameras on the back of 64 and 12 megapixels. The device also has a 4500 mAh battery. Finally, you have to deal with a considerable weight of 285 grams.
