Forever whispered, hidden, disguised… pleasure, whatever its nature, has always been a topic on the corner of our lips. Through his paintings, Oh from Lavallike a mantra, reminds us that it is time to « Take your pleasure seriously ».
“The goal is to relax, have a drink and forget everyday life for a visit to the gallery. » Pleasure above all, especially in front of his works of art. Oh de Laval is exhibited straightforwardly at the Marguo gallery. When we come face to face with her works, the Thai-Polish artist suggests to us that we each have a different meaning of pleasure, that it can be dangerous, but above all that it is not taken seriously. Human relationships and impulses interest Oh de Laval, who first obtained a degree in sociology before using paintbrushes. Faced with the impression that we have that many of these characters reach orgasm, she replies that “What you see is a reflection of you, not me. » So are we obsessed with pleasure as we live in a time of frustration? His answer is that in “this period of fear, pleasure may not be a joke”.
VIOLENCE BABY
A cannibal bite, a woman sewing her skin, a shark with its mouth open… The pleasure of the characters in Oh de Laval is prey to danger. You might think, when you see them painted like children’s books and located in dreamlike spaces, that they live in a candy pink world where pleasure is nothing but lightness. But is there a world where he is not threatened by any danger or violence? Trying to be as realistic as possible, the artist replies that it’s not sure, because “As in real life, it feels like danger is just around the corner.” The way she paints this violence so close and her fantasies, which the Marguo gallery describes as ” greedy »creates a dialogue between sensual pleasure and mortal danger.
FORBIDDEN TO UNDER 18 YEARS
This funny or cute trait might make us believe that we are entering the land of delights, such Alice in Wonderland, but the evocative title of his old works agrees to tell us that we are on the wrong track and that they are delights for the over 18s. As well as certain subjects, which this gluttony by flat colors softens, such as Sunday night in Paris where the maid is taken doggy style on the chest of drawers by the one we imagine to be the master of the house. Seen from a distance, one would think that the Parisian apartment is that of some cartoons, so we advise you to approach a little closer. The flagship work of the exhibition, bearing his name, is a close-up of two open legs dressed in garter belts that two men are kissing. Between these legs, in the background, a little girl in pigtails, amazed, drops her lollipop. This may be the reaction of some viewers to the provocative and ironic paintings of the 33-year-old artist. Oh de Laval’s paintings present an assumed sexual pleasure which should be like what she describes for her art, that is to say “that it always progresses and never has a definitive form. »
