Lewis Hamilton believes he was not singled out by the FIA’s decision to reconsider the course crossing he was fined for at the Qatar Grand Prix. The FIA announced this week that it would further investigate Hamilton’s return to the paddock following his race-ending crash with George Russell on the opening lap of the Qatar Grand Prix.
Hamilton was fined €50,000 (€25,000 of which is suspended for the remainder of the season) and given a reprimand for crossing a live race track. F1’s governing body, the FIA, said in a statement that it was gravely concerned “given his status as a role model” and “the impression his actions may have given to young drivers”. Asked if he felt singled out by the FIA’s decision to re-investigate the incident, Hamilton replied: “I don’t think I was singled out. I think ultimately it was a lack of communication.” Ta. “I don’t think that what the FIA says is what they really mean. What they are saying is that they will consider what steps they can take to prevent something like this from happening in the future. “I think there was an accident recently where a child was hit by a cart, so we always have to focus on safety. I think that’s really at the root of it. But they might do a better job. I think I need to talk to my publicist regarding doing something like that.” Hamilton was referring to the karting World Championships in Franciacorta earlier this month, where 22-year-old Joe Turney was rear-ended by another kart. He had undergone ankle surgery. “They spoke to me and I think what they actually pointed out was important. In the meeting with them and in the stewards’ office, I obviously put my hands up. It was a spur-of-the-moment, wrong decision. “The important thing is to send the right message, especially to young drivers of all ages, that this is not something that should be done.” “I apologized at the time and they have learned how to prevent this from happening in the future.” I think they were considering it.”
