New German champions Bayer 04 Leverkusen are on course to become the first team ever not to lose a single match for an entire Bundesliga season. Xabi Alonso’s team has not lost a single match in the European and German Cup either. Leverkusen took on Stuttgart, the team of goal machines Serhou Guirassy (25 goals) and Denis Undav (18 goals).
In an open game with chances on both sides, Chris Fuhrich opened the score immediately following halftime. 0-1 Undav doubled the lead ten minutes later. The goal seemed to be disallowed because the former Unionist had pulled Robert Andrich to the ground in the run-up to the goal, but the VAR saw no problem with it. 0-2
Leverkusen’s response was immediate. Amine Adli scored the tying goal a handful of minutes later. 1-2
In a rollercoaster of emotions, Odilon Kossounou (ex-Club Brugge) seemed to score the equalizer, but the assistant referee flagged it for offside. The delirium became complete when Andrich hit the ball hard into the net in the 97th minute. It is not the first time that Leverkusen has only been able to secure their series in the closing seconds of the match:
And so there is no end to the impressive series of Xabi Alonso and Bayer Leverkusen. They became champions two weeks ago. Just below in the standings, Stuttgart is three points behind the second, Bayern Munich.
