Leveling Up in Laparoscopic Surgery: The Unlikely Hero of Gaming Controllers

Playing video games can help you relax… but also help advance medicine. The Faculty of Medicine of the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (Switzerland) have carried out the world’s first in vivo tele-operated magnetic endoscopy, performing a biopsy of the stomach of a pig. An operation carried out by a clinician located in a Hong Kong operating room and an expert located in Zurich, 9,300 kilometers away, using in particular a PlayStation Move motion detection controller.

During the operation, a graphical interface provided a 3D visualization of the area to be operated on, and the image from the live endoscopic camera. A robot was used. Equipped with a magnetic navigation system, it made it possible to precisely target the distal end (the area furthest from a reference organ) of the pig’s stomach. The direction of the magnetic field was controlled using a joystick and wireless controller used on hardware intended for PlayStation consoles (Sony).

To promote its DualSense controller, Sony highlights the different levels of force and tension allowed by the tool, and promises better haptic feedback thanks to two actuators which replace traditional vibration motors. From Hong Kong, Doctor Shannon Chan used joysticks on the controller to remotely operate the teleoperated magnetic endoscopy system in Zurich. Designed for applications using virtual reality, PlayStation Move controllers feature motion detection technology to immediately interact with a virtual environment.

A way to facilitate access to care

“A teleoperated system includes a command console, used by the operator to control and monitor the system, and a robotic agent, manifesting the operator’s commands as actions in the operating room. The control console includes a user interface allowing the operator to monitor the procedure and one or more input devices, such as a keyboard and mouse, or a joystick for example,” explain the researchers behind this operation. teleoperated magnetic endoscopy in specialized publications Advanced intelligent systems.

At the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, we are also satisfied with the success of the experiment, which paves the way for the potential creation of a network of robotic platforms making it possible to facilitate access to health care thanks to teleoperated procedures. For the next stage of research, a tele-endoscopy must be carried out on a human stomach, without specifying the equipment used.
