Currently, the level cap in Baldur’s Gate III is 12, fitting some Dungeons & Dragons 5E rules. However, as the director of Larian Studio mentioned, this limitation might be removed one day.

Baldur’s Gate III follows Dungeons & Dragons 5E rules. As a result, the maximum level is limited to 12. However, this is not set in stone. Indeed, Swen Vincke, the general manager of Larian Studio recently discussed in an interview, for the Youtube channel D&D, the impact of the level cap on future DLC. He then confided that the maximum level might be raised to 20, but not without consequence. As a result, we might see extremely powerful spells arrive, as is the case in the paper role-playing game when this level is reached. Certain class archetypes unlock almost divine powers once they reach level 20. A possibility that promises to be attractive.

A DLC maybe without a level cap increase

Swen points out all the same that if a few additional levels are not planned, he has not at all ruled out the addition of a DLC. He adds that: “You can do different things in a DLC, it doesn’t have to be at the end of the game“, so we can deduce that the studio has many ideas to implement additional content without extending the end of the game and the endgame. He also adds that adding additional levels would imply a radical change in the elements of the basic game, be it the stakes, the environments, but also the antagonists and protagonists. But he ends by saying that it is not impossible in another title.

A full D&D campaign in another game?

The evocation of another title is not trivial since in the same interview, Vincke explains that the studio is already working on their next game. By bringing the two pieces of information together, we can imagine that the company is thinking of a new software in the same universe, but this time going further in the progression of the character and the campaign. On the other hand, we risk seeing wait a moment in view of the 6 years of development that Baldur’s Gate III required.
