2024-01-12 09:13:15

For the first time in India, the Levant Sparrowhawk was found on the Thrissur Chavkadu Puttan beach. Bird watchers Nishad Ishal, Sanu Raj and Yadu Prasad discovered the new bird species. All three are members of Kerala Birders Club. This is the 1368th bird species found in India, according to the e-Bird application that collects information regarding birds. With this, the number of bird species found in Kerala has increased to 553.

In November last year, the bird was photographed by Levant Prapitian but was not identified. At first it was thought to be a common bird found in Kerala. Later, when I got suspicious and sought the opinion of experts, it was confirmed yesterday that it was a new bird species and the first report in India. This is the first report in South Asia. Information of observation has been shared.

Nishad Ishal, Sanuraj and Yaduprasad

They migrate from areas such as Greece, southern Europe, southern and eastern parts of Russia. In winter, they migrate in large groups to Egypt and south-western Iran.

Indian Birds Journal Chief Editor J. Praveen, Kerala Birds media expert Abhinand Chandran, senior ornithologist C. Sasikumar, Nirav Bhatt, Oscar Campbell from Ireland and Dick Forsman from Finland confirmed that the found bird is Lavant Sparrowhawk.

Younger birds often adopt new migration routes than older birds. Nishad suggested that this bird might have arrived that way. Nishad Construction, a native of Kannur Pallikunn, is running the firm. Sanuraj, a native of Nanmanda, Kozhikode, is a teacher. Yaduprasad is a robotic engineering student from Palazhi, Kozhikode.
