It is the first Belgian city to digitize the system, the municipal administration announced on Thursday.
On average, 3,800 children are born each year in Leuven, of whom only 1,100 live in the city of Flemish Brabant. Until now, all babies born on the municipal territory had to be registered with the Louvain civil registrar. For this, the parents had to go with their child to the counter of the municipal administration, even if they lived in another municipality.
The city has decided to abolish this system with the establishment of a digital platform. Parents can now register their child at the hospital – which is already possible in other Belgian municipalities – or later, from their home, which is a novelty on Belgian soil.
“This makes the registration process smoother and saves parents time, stress and energy,” says alderman in charge of civil status Dirk Vansina. “We relieve them as much as possible of the administrative process”.
The declaration can be made digitally via the city’s website. However, a physical declaration at the city counter will always be possible for those who wish.
