Letters to the editor: The book of your summer | Opinion | EL PAÍS

If when you kiss someone you don’t feel the uncontrollable desire to want to stay by their side, your story is over. It also happens with books: if you don’t read its pages with absolute abandon and want to devour them in one fell swoop, that book is not for you. Leave it. I am no longer ashamed of leaving books half-read, because content that is inappropriate for me will be perfect for others. I have no qualms about putting the end on a different page than the one the author wrote, with the best of intentions. It’s fair. That’s why I advocate leaving books half-read, because there is always a story just for you waiting to be discovered. Time is limited, and summer moves as fast as life itself. It’s time for us to stop being spectators and become protagonists of a passionate story; for love, for the books that captivate us and for those we don’t want to stop kissing.

Ten months of horror

Ten months have passed since the Israeli army carried out horror and barbarity on the civilian population of Gaza, in a merciless reprisal after the terrorist attacks perpetrated by Hamas that caused the death of 1,200 Israelis and the kidnapping of another 250. During this time, almost 40,000 Gazans have died, most of them women and children, as well as hundreds of thousands of displaced people in a devastated Strip, where Israel has broken all the red lines of international law and UN resolutions. What else must happen to achieve a ceasefire once and for all after so much death and pain?

The madness of the escapist

Puigdemont’s staging makes me wonder why he did it. Perhaps he expected more people, more pressure so that an election, that of Salvador Illa, would not take place, a full-blown Trumpism. What they are achieving is that other nationalists, from Euskadi among them, are sick of playing hide-and-seek, of yes but no, and many see Puigdemont naked like the king in the story, and for those close to him he is well dressed and with an impeccable fringe.

Financing

Now that we are talking about territorial taxation, we should open a genuine national debate to achieve an equal and supportive distribution of resources between all the communities. Wouldn’t it be better to eliminate the privileges of Navarre and the Basque Country than to add another grievance with the singular Catalan financing? It would prevent the rich territories from failing to contribute their share. It is not so difficult; just talk to achieve more territorial solidarity. We must avoid division among Spaniards. Otherwise it could encourage the wealthiest citizens to raise a tax objection.
