“Let’s stop the over-the-counter sale of hyaluronic acid”: the alert of 200 cosmetic surgeons

They don’t want to see these images on social media anymore. In Le Parisien, two hundred plastic surgeons signed a column demanding that the authorities the ban on delivering products to inflate the lipscurrently available without a prescription in pharmacies.

“Currently, hundreds of injectors, non-doctors, practice illegal acts on the population, especially the youngest and most vulnerable, with great publicity on social networks. These illegal injections are the source of often irreversible complications”, warn the professionals of the National Union of Reconstructive and Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (SNCPRE). Before continuing in this forum: “In some cases, they might lead to sepsis, gangrene and hospitalizations in intensive care, involving the vital prognosis of young patients. Never had such complications been identified in France in forty years of practice.

Practitioners explain that injectors are supplied directly from pharmacies or from certain online distributors. “We also see people, including minors, injecting these products themselves, for example to increase the volume of the lips, by following pseudo-instructions available on online videos”. Consequently, plastic surgeons want “the sale of hyaluronic acid and other injectable fillers to be controlled, and that their delivery be made only to doctors authorized to perform these acts“.

Thursday, March 30 was held the trial of “Queens Lips”. These two sisters invented themselves “hyaluronic acid injectors”. As reported by Le Parisien, they realized injections on nearly 600 young women between January 2020 and November 2022. Everything changes in March 2021 when a dissatisfied customer files a complaint. The prosecution requested 6 months suspended imprisonment for the two sisters and a fine of 10,000 for each.
