let’s not send Corey Schueneman too quickly to Laval

This year, the eyes of CH fans are on several young defensemen trying to reach the NHL. Kaiden Guhle, Jordan Harris and Justin Barron are vying for regular positions and while this quest is interesting, we shouldn’t forget regarding the others who are also in the running.

Among these is Corey Schueneman, who in my eyes is a forgotten player from this training camp. Certainly forgotten by many, but not by the new assistant coach of the Canadian Stéphane Robidas, who had only good for the 27-year-old defender.

The latter is indeed in the race and does a good job in the shadows, as reported by journalists Arpon Basu and Marc-Antoine Godin of The Athletic.

If he is not recognized as being the fastest player on an ice rink, he is nevertheless effective in his role. He notably looked good in Sunday’s intra-squad match in the eyes of Robidas.

We must not forget that Schueneman has experience in the NHL. He has 24 games under the tie and his work was appreciated by Martin St-Louis at the end of last season. The latter praised him a lot for his effort at play and his fighting spirit, two qualities that made the CH coach an excellent hockey player.

Moreover, if we look at the profile of each of the coaches of the Montreal team, all had to persevere before reaching the NHL and took advantage of their opportunities when they presented themselves. Schueneman fits into this mold and has a real chance of being part of the CH team on October 12, whether as a seventh defender or as a member of the defensive brigade.

Just as young players are expected to fill the holes on the blue line, we must not forget the 27-year-old defender who, for me, has not looked bad since the start of the camp. With Barron’s shaky performance, an even bigger door might open for other defenders.

When I look at the CH line-up, I have to give a place to Schueneman, whether it’s like 6e or 7e defender.
