On the occasion of World Cancer Day, February 4, RoseUp, a patients’ association which informs, supports and defends the rights of women affected by all types of cancer, is launching its first podcast “Let’s Dare to Live” dedicated to at the announcement of the illness. RoseUp also calls for a revaluation of this poorly and unevenly applied system.
How do you find out you have cancer? Who announces it? The day this hits you, what happens in your head, your body, your life? Nine women, of all ages, from all backgrounds, affected by cancer recount, in their naked voices and with vivid memories, this suspended moment, outside of time, where everything collapses into a great feeling of solitude.
« Our objective with this new media, explains Isabelle Huet, director general of RoseUp, is to make their voices heard and send the message that they remain women actors in their life and care journey. It is regarding better understanding what it is like to live this fight on a daily basis, when you are a mother, a daughter, a grandmother, a sister, a lover, a friend, or a working woman, and a woman who has dreams and plans”.
The association reminds us that in France, 400,000 people are diagnosed with cancer each year. The announcement of the illness is often experienced as an explosion whose shock wave reverberates at different levels: in the head, the body, the family, social, professional surroundings… How to find the words, the strength when you are still in shock yourself? Most of the time, people affected by cancer must find the resources to absorb the shock on their own. This is what this season 1 of “Dare to live” highlights. However, this should not be the case. For almost 20 years, there has been an announcement system designed precisely to support people at this difficult time. But it is clear that it remains unevenly applied today. RoseUp is tackling this subject in order to raise awareness among health stakeholders of the need to upgrade the announcement system.
Thus, RoseUp offers:
– to provide a real evaluation system for the system with indicators that would be co-constructed with patient associations;
– to consider a price increase for medical procedures and consultations linked to the notification system;
– to train and inform health professionals in hospitals and in the city on referenced support care,
– to train caregivers from the first years of study in health literacy in order to improve communication and dialogue between patients, their loved ones and caregivers.
« At RoseUp, we know that clear and immediately understandable information on the disease, treatments, patients’ rights and existing supportive care is essential to building a relationship of trust between sick people and medical teams.«
