Leopold “Poldi” Grausam was born on June 29, 1943 and consequently the former attacker is celebrating his 80th birthday today, Thursday!
The Kagraner, who followed his parents to Pressbaum as a teenager, came to Rapid as a 16-year-old boy after a successful trial and, despite a serious injury, scored a remarkable 70 goals in 180 competitive games for green-white between 1963 and 1970!
He became champion three times with Rapid, twice he was able to bring the ÖFB Cup to Hütteldorf. His competitive debut remains a record, the striker scored four goals in a 5-0 home win against Kapfenberg. The Viennese wore the national team jersey eight times and was able to enter the shooting list three times. His popularity is also proven by the fact that in 1967 he was able to win the “Footballer of the Year” poll, which was carried out for the first time by the Kronen Zeitung!
Leopold Grausam was also part of the legendary team that eliminated the champions Real Madrid in the round of 16 of the UEFA Cup in 1968. Wacker Innsbruck even scored the gold goal in a sensational 1-0 away win for the Tyroleans immediately after leaving Rapid at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu against the Weisses Ballet, but in the second leg he and his teammates were beaten by two goals from the Spaniards in the rapid quarter of an hour.
