Leonard Tunnel Renovation Updates: Traffic Delays and Lane Reductions on Brussels East Ring

2024-03-18 17:29:00

A new phase of work has begun in the renovation of the Leonard tunnel. This portion of the Brussels East Ring is used by 100,000 vehicles per day. It is one of the central points of entry and exit from Brussels.

From today, on the inner ring, just before entering the Tervuren four arms tunnel, the roadway will be narrowed: we will go from two lanes to just one in the direction of Waterloo. Second black spot, a little further on, in the bend which comes from the Ring and allows you to go up onto the E411, the left lane will be removed.

This morning, from 6 a.m., lines began to form, as noted by our journalist, Cathline Delvaux, who went to the site. It was moving at a walking pace. At 9 a.m., there were still around ten kilometers of lines, from Zaventem to the Tervuren tunnel. The delay time is currently estimated at 45 minutes.

As rush hour begins to arrive, our journalist Romain Mayez takes stock. “During rush hours like now, traffic jams are denser than usual. But once you pass this tunnel of the four arms of Tervuren, everything is fine. At the Léonard crossroads, traffic is quite fluid“, he explains.

At 6 p.m., the situation was already a bit more delicate with slowdowns of more than 30 minutes between Woluwé-Saint-Etienne and Tervuren towards Léonard. In the other direction, between Woluwé-Saint-Etienne and Diegem, you are slowed down for more or less 15 minutes.

Another slowdown area: the connection between the Brussels ring road and the E411 motorway towards Namur where motorists drive at walking pace.

It is especially this evening that we expect serious disruptions given that the work is taking place towards Waterloo, and therefore leaving Brussels.
