The funeral of Léonard Gianadda took place Thursday morning in front of hundreds of people gathered at the church of Martigny-Bourg (VS). The ceremony pays a final tribute to the patron who leaves behind an internationally renowned legacy.
The ranks of the Saint-Michel church, which can accommodate around 600 people, are full. “Dear Leonard, once once more you are right, your friends have come, they are all there,” began Jean-Henry Papilloud, a relative of Valais who died on Sunday morning.
On the benches, family, friends, representatives of the arts and political figures attend the ceremony that Léonard Gianadda wanted to be ecumenical. After a tribute to the patron, the pianist Olivier Cavé, a native of Martigny, performed several pieces during the mass officiated by a priest and a pastor.
The Valais patron died Sunday morning at the age of 88. He left the internationally renowned Pierre Gianadda foundation in Martigny, which exhibited the works of illustrious artists such as Picasso, Van Gogh and Rodin. The disappearance of this “great man”, “significant figure”, provoked numerous reactions.
