The fast of Lent is a difficult process for the Greeks who show a great love for meat and fish, however IELKA research shows that a relatively large percentage of them observe it

Lent begins today and is accompanied by the great fast that ends on Easter Sunday, according to the tradition of Orthodoxy.

According to experts, fasting has multiple benefits for the human body, but it also hides pitfalls if it is not done carefully and with proper nutritional coverage of all the necessary elements for our health.

According to nutritionist Polina Gianniotis, fasting helps a lot to protect the heart, as cholesterol can drop even by 40 to 50 milligrams, something very important especially in Greece where cardiovascular diseases are high.

As for the possibility of weight gain, as the expert underlines, it clearly exists if a balanced diet is not followed. After all, the days of fasting are many, so attention is needed to cover the body with the necessary nutrients it needs and the consumption of foods, sources of protein, which is lacking due to the absence of animal products from the diet of those who are fasting.

Protein can be replenished through soy products, which in addition to protein are also rich in calcium, through legumes and seafood, products, mushrooms and other foods.

In addition to physical health, however, fasting seems to favor mental health as well, as it affects our mood, while in several cases greater clarity and lower levels of fatigue and anxiety have been observed in people who fast and follow a balanced diet.

What research shows regarding fasting eating habits

An IELKA survey shows that 1 in 2 consumers fasts during Holy Week and 1 in 8 throughout Great Lent, with 1 in 2 considering that fasting is good for their health.

The research, carried out from March 2 to 8, 2024 with a sample of 800 consumers from all over Greece, is of particular interest both in relation to eating and purchasing habits.

As it turns out, Greeks fast during Holy Week, in a fairly large percentage, however reduced compared to previous years, while 33% of respondents who stated that they fast said they like that they do it, while 55% consider it good for his health, with 18% believing that it contributes to the increase in body weight, when 14% have the opposite opinion, believing that with fasting one can lose weight.

34% of the public consider that their diet during this particular period of fasting costs more by spending more money than usual, while 27% find it difficult to find what to eat and 22% are stressed regarding their diet.

During the fasting period, there is also an increase in delivery food for 7% of respondents, while 20% consume plant-based food substitutes. Most people find it difficult to fast from oil and dairy, as well as sweets, while it is easier to fast from meat and fish.

During the fasting period, the most consumed foods are fruits and vegetables, almost daily, followed by nuts, pasta and oils, regarding twice a week.
