Lenovo’s Ambitious Vision: Becoming the Third Largest Smartphone Player in 3 Years

Motorola/Moto, a subsidiary of Lenovo.

It has become clear that the company’s top executives have quite ambitious visions for the smartphone market.

Matthew Zielinski, Lenovo’s president of international markets, made the remarks in an interview with CNBC at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.“I’m betting that I’ll be number 3 in the world in three years.”That’s what he said.

I’m curious as to what he’s betting on, but his statement is quite bullish.

Currently, Apple and Samsung are the two largest players in the global smartphone market, with a combined market share of approximately 40%, followed by Xiaomi and Oppo.

Meanwhile, according to Counter Point’s latest research, Motorola and Lenovo’s combined market share in the third quarter of 2023 will be approximately 4%, ranking eighth in the world.

In other words, taking the 3rd place share in the world without any other changes in the rankings means taking the current position of Xiaomi, which seems to be quite a challenge.

However, Motorola has certainly been successful in certain markets, ranking third in market share in the United States. It also has the second largest market share in South America.

I certainly get the impression that the lineup of Motorola/Moto brand smartphones is more aggressive than it was a while ago, but it still feels a little unrealistic to expect them to overtake Xiaomi’s market share.

On the other hand, “2 to 3 years” may be a bit unreasonable, but we predicted that 5 to 6 years ago, Xiaomi’s smartphones would take the 3rd place market share in the world, and that Xperia’s market share would fall to this extent. There should be few people.

In that sense, we still don’t know what will happen in the smartphone industry.
I feel like I can’t say it’s absolutely impossible.
