Lenovo unveiled the first-ever transparent laptop, “Project Crystal,” at Mobile World Congress Barcelona, which features a transparent screen and keyboard.

The device includes a transparent “Micro-LED” screen displayed between two layers of “Gorilla Glass”, a nano-glass keyboard, and augmented reality technologies that integrate the surrounding environment with the digital display.

Although there are challenges such as screen resolution and privacy, Lenovo is working on improvements that may make this technology more practical and viable in the future, with a focus on enhancing collaboration and interaction.

Lenovo unveiled the first transparent laptop, which is called “Project Crystal“, during the Mobile World Congress held in Barcelona, Spain. Although it is not completely transparent, the device is full of unique features that include a transparent screen and keyboard that reflect a glass appearance.

The “Lenovo Project Crystal” project may represent a qualitative shift in the world of technology as it is the first transparent laptop that may see the light globally.

This laptop is distinguished by its elegant frame that mimics the design of the Lenovo ThinkPad, but it stands out with its wide glass surface that turns into a digital tablet immediately after opening the device.

According to what Lenovo announced, the device contains a transparent “Micro-LED” screen sandwiched between two layers of “Gorilla Glass”, connected with a transparent adhesive, which is reminiscent of the screen technology presented by “Samsung” at the “CES 2024” exhibition.

Despite its limited transparency of 55%, images displayed at 720p on Windows 11 remain clear and rich in color, making watching videos a dazzling experience. This transparent screen is topped with a nano-optical glass keyboard that appears when light passes through it, in addition to a large trackpad that opens the system upon touching it, allowing Project Crystal to be used as easily as any traditional laptop.

However, this innovation raised several questions about the target audience and the benefits expected from a screen with such specifications. For their part, Lenovo officials explained that the goal of the transparent screen is to enhance collaboration, as others can look at the back of the screen to see what is displayed on it clearly. Lenovo has integrated a camera into the back of the computer that allows it to analyze the surrounding environment and combine it with augmented reality technologies that are displayed on the transparent screen, creating an immersive interactive experience.

It is worth noting that despite the broad capabilities of this project, there are several challenges facing it, such as screen resolution and privacy issues. However, Lenovo emphasizes that there is a possibility to improve the screen resolution while maintaining its transparency, and is working on developing a system through which the level of transparency can be adjusted to ensure privacy.

It is also reported that at the moment, the “Lenovo Crystal ThinkBook” project remains experimental and may not be ready for commercial production. However, its appeal and innovative technologies are impressive and eye-catching, making it difficult to stop looking at it and imagine its future possibilities.
