RB Leipzig extended the best start in its young club history and took the lead in the German Bundesliga with a win in the top game against Freiburg. The Saxons prevailed against the third team 3-1 despite being behind at the break. Borussia Dortmund lost 2-1 in Augsburg four days after losing 5-2 to Real Madrid.
VfB Stuttgart saved a 2-1 win against Kiel over time. St. Pauli and Wolfsburg played a goalless game. The newcomer from Hamburg is still without a goal at the Millerntor at home. Wolfsburg and coach Ralph Hasenhüttl could slip to 15th place with eight points after eight rounds.
With 20 points, Leipzig currently leads the table, three points ahead of Bayern Munich. The record champions will be guests at Latest Bochum on Sunday. The Bulls only turned up the heat against Freiburg (15) after a slow first half.
Willi Orban (47th) equalized Freiburg’s deserved lead through Ritsu Doan (15th), Lutsharel Geertruida (58th) used a slipped ball to make it 2-1. Lois Openda sealed the win after Andre Silva’s through ball (79′). Leipzig goalie Peter Gulacsi first celebrated a new club record without conceding a goal (510 Bundesliga minutes), but later had to be substituted with an injury.
ÖFB team player Christoph Baumgartner, who was only in the starting line-up for the second time after Xavi Simmons’ ankle injury, had his legs decisively in the game before the 2-1 and 3-1. While his two red-white-red teammates Nicolas Seiwald (adductor) and Xaver Schlager (torn cruciate ligament) were missing, three Austrians played on Freiburg’s side. Michael Gregoritsch replaced his ÖFB teammate Junior Adamu in the 68th minute, Philipp Lienhart played in central defense.
Dortmund is already seven points behind Leipzig. Borussia only got one point in four away games (before that against Bremen, Stuttgart and in Berlin). Even against Augsburg, Marcel Sabitzer’s team (played until the break) had no joy despite a lightning start with a goal from Donyel Malen (5th). Augsburg turned the game around thanks to Alexis Claude-Maurice (25th, 50th). Nuri Sahin’s team is already under pressure in the second round of the Cup in Wolfsburg. Before the Champions League home game against Sturm Graz (November 5th), BVB will host Leipzig.
Stuttgart also beat Kiel 2-0 with a slight Champions League rotation. The Swabians improved to eighth place thanks to Deniz Undav (19th) and El Bilal Toure (61st). Newly promoted Kiel led by Benedikt Pichler (up to the 46th) came close after a yellow-red card for Stuttgart’s Julian Chabot (66th). Armin Gigovic ensured a hot final phase (84th), in which Kiel’s Jann-Fiete Arp also saw yellow-red (88th).

Interview with Sports Analyst Jane Roberts on RB Leipzig’s Latest Bundesliga Triumph
Editor: Joining us today is sports analyst Jane Roberts to discuss RB Leipzig’s impressive performance in the Bundesliga. Jane, thanks for being here!
Jane Roberts: Thank you for having me!
Editor: RB Leipzig has had an incredible start to the season, extending their best start in club history. What stood out to you in their recent match against Freiburg?
Jane Roberts: When Leipzig fell behind 1-0 at halftime, it was a real test of character. Their ability to regroup after the break was remarkable, showcasing their resilience and tactical adaptation. The equalizer from Willi Orban just a couple of minutes into the second half set the tone for a dominant performance.
Editor: With the win, Leipzig now leads the Bundesliga table. How significant is this lead over rivals like Bayern Munich?
Jane Roberts: It’s a major psychological advantage. Being three points clear, especially with Bayern Munich always lurking, adds pressure on them. If Leipzig can maintain this consistency, they could very well contend for the title, something fans have been hopeful for over the years.
Editor: Borussia Dortmund, on the other hand, faced disappointment with their loss to Augsburg. What does this mean for their season?
Jane Roberts: It puts them in a challenging position. They’ve had a rough patch, including a heavy defeat to Real Madrid. Consistency is crucial in this league, and Dortmund needs to find a way to bounce back quickly before they lose touch with the leaders.
Editor: Meanwhile, VfB Stuttgart managed a dramatic late win against Kiel. How does this impact their season moving forward?
Jane Roberts: That win shows Stuttgart’s fighting spirit. Late victories can boost team morale significantly. If they can build on this momentum, they might push for a higher position in the table, especially with more fixtures coming up.
Editor: Lastly, what’s your take on Wolfsburg’s recent struggles under Ralph Hasenhüttl?
Jane Roberts: It’s a tough situation for them. With just eight points from eight matches, they’re in danger of slipping into the relegation zone. Hasenhüttl needs to find a way to spark their offense, as they’ve been unable to find the back of the net consistently. If they can’t improve soon, they may find themselves facing real danger.
Editor: Great insights, Jane. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this exciting Bundesliga season!
Jane Roberts: My pleasure! It’s certainly an exciting time for football in Germany.
R since their rise in the league.
Editor: Let’s talk about some key players. Christoph Baumgartner made a notable impact in the match. How important do you think his role will be moving forward?
Jane Roberts: Absolutely, Baumgartner’s involvement is critical, especially with injuries to key players like Xavi Simmons. His contribution in the build-up to both the second and third goals highlighted not just his skill but also his ability to step up in crucial moments. As Leipzig progresses, maintaining player form and fitness will be vital, and Baumgartner’s influence could be a game-changer.
Editor: On the other hand, Borussia Dortmund seems to be struggling, sitting seven points behind Leipzig after their recent loss. What’s your take on their situation?
Jane Roberts: It’s concerning for Dortmund fans. Their away form has been dismal, managing only one point in four games, which puts them under significant pressure, especially with tough fixtures coming up. They need to find a way to regain confidence quickly. The upcoming match against Leipzig could be pivotal; a win could reignite their season, but a loss might have serious implications for their title hopes.
Editor: Very insightful, Jane. what can Leipzig do to maintain their momentum as the season progresses?
Jane Roberts: Consistency is key. They need to manage injuries effectively and ensure their tactical flexibility can adapt to different opponents. Keeping their home form strong will be crucial, especially as they head into the winter months when the fixtures pile up. If they can maintain their current level of performance, they have a strong chance of not just being contenders but possibly lifting the trophy at the end of the season.
Editor: Thank you, Jane, for sharing your insights on RB Leipzig and the Bundesliga. It’ll be interesting to see how the season unfolds!
Jane Roberts: My pleasure! Looking forward to it.
