RB Leipzig has successfully defended its German Soccer Cup title and prevented a happy ending for the outgoing Eintracht Frankfurt coach Oliver Glasner. Coach Marco Rose’s team won the final in Berlin’s Olympia Stadium 2-0 (0-0) once morest Frankfurt and, like last year, lifted the DFB Cup. In contrast to Glasner, the season ended successfully for the ÖFB team players Konrad Laimer and Xaver Schlager.
Christopher Nkunku (71st) and Dominik Szoboszlai (85th) gave Leipzig their second victory in the fourth cup final of the Saxons in the past five years with their goals. “It’s a dream to end the season like this. It was a deserved final win following 90 minutes. That’s what you play football for,” explained Laimer, who played through and saw the yellow card, on ServusTV. “It was a very intense, hard-fought game. We’re delighted that we won that,” added Schlager, who came on as a substitute in the 78th minute.
For Glasner, on the other hand, his two-year era does not end with the second title. “We gave Leipzig a real cup fight. Of course I’m disappointed, but pride in what we’ve achieved in the past two years clearly outweighs it. Those were great years,” said the 48-year-old. Eintracht had won the Europa League under the Upper Austrian last year.
The game began in front of more than 74,000 spectators with a minute’s silence for the 15-year-old young footballer from Berlin who died a few days ago as a result of an assault at a youth tournament. After that, both fan camps supported their teams once more, with a clear numerical advantage for Eintracht. However, Leipzig had the first chance, but Werner’s shot was too central and weak (4th). On the other side, Randal Kolo Muani fired the first warning shot (16′).
However, the finale remained poor in playful highlights, while numerous pyrotechnics were ignited in the stands. Frankfurt were the more aggressive eleven and increased the pressure in the second period. However, the goal fell on the other side when the Eintracht defense was unable to clarify a changeover situation in Leipzig. Nkunku fired following a dribble in the penalty area, his shot deflected and hit Kevin Trapp’s goal unstoppably.
Szoboszlai made the preliminary decision shortly before the end. Again, the Hessians, who have to wait for their sixth cup success, did not look good at the back. Glasner’s winning “diver” therefore failed to materialize this time. Frankfurt missed out on participating in the Europa League and will compete internationally in the Conference League with a new coach next season. Leipzig is qualified for the Champions League via the league.
Laimer says goodbye to the Saxons with two cup wins. “I want to try something new, to see something new. I’m grateful for the six years here. It was a good time,” said the man from Salzburg, who is believed to be moving to the champions in Munich. “Of course I’ll miss him. We’ve known each other for ages, we get along great on and off the pitch. Of course it hurts, but I’m happy for him. He’ll take his next step,” explained Schlager, for whom it is the first title is abroad. With Nicolas Seiwald, however, the 25-year-old has once more received a compatriot from the Salzburg football school.
How things will continue for Glasner is still unclear. He will now go on vacation, so the coach. “I haven’t thought regarding my future at all. That will come now. At some point I’ll show up somewhere.”
