RB Leipzig has successfully defended its German Soccer Cup title and prevented a happy ending for the outgoing Eintracht Frankfurt coach Oliver Glasner. Coach Marco Rose’s team won the final in Berlin’s Olympia Stadium 2-0 (0-0) against Frankfurt and, like last year, lifted the DFB Cup. In contrast to Glasner, the season ended successfully for the ÖFB team players Konrad Laimer and Xaver Schlager.
Christopher Nkunku (71st) and Dominik Szoboszlai (85th) gave Leipzig their second victory in the fourth cup final of the Saxons in the past five years with their goals. “It’s a dream to end the season like this. It was a deserved final win after 90 minutes. That’s what you play football for,” explained Laimer, who played through and saw the yellow card, on ServusTV. “It was a very intense, hard-fought game. We’re delighted that we won that,” added Schlager, who came on as a substitute in the 78th minute.
For Glasner, on the other hand, his two-year era does not end with the second title. “We gave Leipzig a real cup fight. Of course I’m disappointed, but pride in what we’ve achieved in the past two years clearly outweighs it. Those were great years,” said the 48-year-old. Eintracht had won the Europa League under the Upper Austrian last year.

Laimer says goodbye to the Saxons with two cup wins. “I want to try something new, to see something new. I’m grateful for the six years here. It was a good time,” said the man from Salzburg, who is believed to be moving to the champions in Munich. “Of course I’ll miss him. We’ve known each other for ages, we get along great on and off the pitch. Of course it hurts, but I’m happy for him. He’ll take his next step,” explained Schlager, for whom it is the first title is abroad.
