Leica announced this Thursday the new SL3, the latest version of its full-frame mirrorless camera system, succeeding 2019’s SL2. Inside its all-metal body are the Leica Q3 components. It includes a 60MP sensor, improved autofocus, and the ability to record 8K video.

But what sets the SL3 apart are more pro-friendly features, including a super-large grip for extended use and IP54 water resistance for peace of mind outdoors.

Out of specifications, What differentiates the SL3 from the SL2 is a slightly smaller size, although it is still very large and robust, and hardware tuned for a more user-friendly and efficient experience.

Changes include an additional programmable dial on top of the camera for faster controls, moving all rear menu buttons to the right for better one-thumb use, and swapping the power switch for a power button with an LED indicator around it. from it to power and battery information at a glance.

Also there’s a full-size HDMI 2.1 port, a tilting 3.2-inch LCD touchscreen, a CFexpress Type B slot in addition to the SD, and even a timecode interface.

Internally, Leica also tried to make the software easier to navigate and quicker to understand. The icons are simpler, with more contrast, and the video menu is differentiated from the photo menus through colors — red for photo, yellow for video.

But most importantly, Leica reminded Nikon by encouraging customization of buttons and dials. There are numerous options for customizing the three outer dials and many of the buttons, along with the ability to move and customize internal menu icons. So if you like remapping entire camera systems, the SL3 will provide an endless amount of entertainment and, hopefully, lead to more efficient filming too.

A Leica SL3 costs US$6,995 (something close to a hefty R$34,500 at current prices) just for the body, which is more expensive than top-tier cameras from Nikon or Sony. But if clean, minimalist German design is more your style, the SL3 promises to have all of Leica’s best specs in a full-frame body built for professionals.
