After Legia Warsaw’s defeat (1-0) once morest AZ Alkmaar on Thursday in the Europa Conference League, clashes broke out around the stadium, leading to the arrest of two players from the Polish club, Radovan Pankov and Josué. After the 1-0 defeat conceded to Alkmaar, Thursday for their second Europa Conference League match, two Legia Warsaw players, Radovan Pankov and Josué, were arrested by the Dutch police near the stadium. A subsequent arrest of the scuffles between the Polish delegation and the police following the meeting.
Clashes which broke out, according to TVP Sports, following the decision of the Dutch police to close the stadium for ten minutes, citing fear for the safety of Legia players. But the lack of transparency on the part of the Dutch riot police allegedly caused heated discussions and then clashes leading the authorities to intervene inside the players’ bus.
President and owner Dariusz Mioduski was allegedly punched in the face and several staff members were beaten with batons.
In Warsaw, the double arrest provoked reactions at the highest levels. Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, in the middle of the electoral campaign, said he was “scandalized” by the situation. “I am waiting for a very clear report from the Netherlands,” he said on Friday.
Warsaw denounces “prejudice” once morest Poles
“It is clear from the testimonies of the victims that the actions of the mayor of Alkmaar and the local police in particular can be interpreted as being characterized by a national prejudice,” continued the head of government in a press release published following the summons in the morning from Dutch Ambassador Daphne Bergsma.
Released on Friday by the Dutch police, the Portuguese Josué and the Serbian Radovan Pankov are under investigation. They are suspected of having attacked two AZ Alkmaar staff members requiring “medical attention”, according to Dutch police.
If the Polish Football Federation (PZPN) indicated that it had requested explanations from the Dutch Federation and UEFA, the Dutch police for their part denounced violence committed by Polish supporters even before the start of the match. A police officer lost consciousness and security forces had to use tear gas, according to the same source.
