Dubai: Composer Michiaki Watanabe (real name Watanabe Michiaki) died on June 23 in a hospital in Tokyo of heart failure. He was 96 years old.

Mr. Watanabe was born in 1925. He studied Psychology at the prestigious University of Tokyo under the supervision of composers Ikuma Dan and Saburo Muroi. In the 1950s, he made his debut as an author in a radio drama produced by Chubu-Nippon Broadcasting. Over the next twenty years, Watanabe worked regularly with Toho on film soundtracks, while honing his skills under the direction of jazz musician Sadao Watanabe and others. This had a huge impact on Mr. Watanabe’s composition. When he created the Z theme for Mazinger Z, he introduced brass instruments and also used analog synthesizers. This combination was uniquely perceived by listeners in the 1970s.
Mr. Watanabe, Mazinger Z, Great Mazinger, Getter Robo Go, fight! He was responsible for the music for several anime series such as Super Robot Life Transformer V. He also started with the first two versions of Kikaider, Inazuman, the first six in the Super Sentai series (and was later introduced to the Super Sentai series Kikai Sentai Zenkaiger only last year) and Space Sheriff Gavan . He also composed the first five tracks for the Metal Hero series.
