Mr. Watanabe was born in 1925. He studied Psychology at the prestigious University of Tokyo under the supervision of composers Ikuma Dan and Saburo Muroi. In the 1950s, he made his debut as an author in a radio drama produced by Chubu-Nippon Broadcasting. Over the next twenty years, Watanabe worked regularly with Toho on film soundtracks, while honing his skills under the direction of jazz musician Sadao Watanabe and others. This had a huge impact on Mr. Watanabe’s composition. When he created the Z theme for Mazinger Z, he introduced brass instruments and also used analog synthesizers. This combination was uniquely perceived by listeners in the 1970s.
