Legal Medicine Report indicates that in five years more than 4,000 Venezuelans have died in Colombia

Colombia has become for millions of Venezuelans the opportunity to change their lives they led in their country, an existence with few possibilities of subsistence, and for more than 5 years, the wave of neighbors who have come to Colombia in search of refuge is impressive, so much so that the official figures seem to fall short, because just by walking down any street in Colombia you can hear the unmistakable hint of those born in the homeland of the Liberator.

He does like many Venezuelans they arrive looking for a better life, unfortunately others lose it for different reasons, some in the hard journey on foot, others due to illness and unfortunately, many die of violent causes.

A report by the Institute of Legal Medicine indicates a worrying figure, the compendium of investigations and data of the entity ensures that between 2017 and 2021, 4,000 Venezuelans died in the country and among the main causes are violence, suicide, fights and traffic accidents.

As of the date of the report, the Venezuelans who died in Colombian national territory are 4,276, 1,634 have died as a result of homicide with a firearm, 693 in traffic accidents, 519 homicides with a knife, 206 suicides and 467 deaths from natural causes.

The Institute of Legal Medicine also reports that 189 Venezuelans have died in the middle of fights and the death of 568 more is being investigated.

2021 became the year in which the most deaths of Venezuelans occurred with 1,416, followed by 2020 with 1,077, 2019 with 1,015, 2018 with 579, and 2017 with 189.

Venezuelans in Colombia, in most cases, have had to employed under the modality of informality and a large percentage of them swell the poverty belts of the cities and towns of Colombia, but the phenomena that most concern us are the crime and prostitution, since many of the crimes that occur, especially robberies and drug trafficking, have Venezuelans as protagonists.

The case of prostitution is a problem that seems out of control and many brothel establishments offer their clients the novelty of having women from Venezuela, who offer lower ‘rates’ than the traditional ones and as is well known in this ‘business’ , also has the presence of minors.

The great wave of Venezuelans in the country has brought serious problems of intolerance and xenophobia, especially because many Venezuelans are involved in criminal acts, despite the seriousness of the situation, little is being done and work must be done because this is a social problem that is becoming more and more acute.
