It’s an ordinary day at the Reussette culinary events agency. It’s 1 p.m., Romane and her colleague are enjoying a “CBD guacamole burger (cannabidiol) » offered by a Parisian caterer. The mission of their lunch break: to taste the dish with a view to presenting it at the evenings of fashion week, which starts on February 26 in Paris. But, an hour following the first mouthfuls, the tasting took an unexpected turn: the two young women were completely “torn”.

“At first, I feel like I’m in cotton wool, my mouth is thick, I’m bursting into fits of laughter”, testifies Romane. Once home, around 8 p.m., the effects do not fade. “I feel outside of reality. I wonder how long I’ll stay up there.”, worries the thirty-year-old, who however received no warning from the caterer. The next morning, the feeling of being “out of one’s body” is still there. She then contacts the service provider, who demands explanations from her supplier. “He admits to having given me pot funds, residues of an HHC derivative”says the caterer, who claims to have changed his source of supply.

Unlike CBD, present naturally in the cannabis plant, which does not cause addiction or psychotropic effects, HHC (hexahydrocannabinol) is a molecule resulting from the oxidation of THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol), the main component psychoactive cannabis. HHC was classified as a narcotic product by the National Agency for the Safety of Medicines and Health Products (ANSM) in June 2023 and banned for sale and consumption. But you just have to open the door of a CBD store to see that it has been replaced by a plethora of derivative products: puff (disposable electronic cigarette), “pre-roll” (joint ready to smoke), “gummies” (candies similar to fruit paste) with H4CBD, THCPO, THCP, THCV…

“HHC is no longer authorized, but we have another similar molecule called THCP. It causes the same effects as cannabis without being illegal”, assures me the seller of a CBD store in the Laumière district in Paris 19th. Around him, glass jars filled with around ten varieties of hemp flowers with evocative names such as “Lemon Amnesia” or “Monster Kush”. “The chemical process is very simple: you just need to derivatize the molecule a little. We keep the same psychoactive effects, but the name changes, so legally, it’s OK”confirms Renaud Boisseau, chemist at Labostark, certified by the ANSM to analyze cannabinoids.
