Left-wing extremist arrested after attacks on France’s railway network

Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin shared these media reports on Monday via his user account on an online network. This is the first arrest in this context that has been made public. On Friday, several high-speed lines were paralyzed by arson attacks on the French railway network shortly before the opening of the Olympic Games in Paris.

Unknown assailants had set fire to facilities on several TGV lines. To date, no one has claimed responsibility for the attacks. The high-speed lines that connect Paris with the west, north and east of the country were affected.

Repair work around the clock

French Transport Minister Patrice Vergriete told radio station RTL that all trains would be running normally again from Monday morning. Repairs were carried out around the clock over the weekend so that the damage could be repaired. The damage to the state-owned railway operator SNCF will be considerable. 100,000 people were affected by train cancellations and 800,000 by delays.
