“Left candidates, raise your head!” Your children, the young people of this country, are counting on you ”

Tribune. Dear Anne, Arnaud, Christiane, Fabien, Jean-Luc and Yannick, Since you signed up for the next presidential election, we have listened to you. Each and every one of you has strong words, engaging proposals and a vision in which we can, at least in part, find ourselves. Yet once once more, and probably the last, we want to alert you to your responsibility. We are three months away from the presidential election and we find ourselves facing a wall.

The Republic is weakening

The climatic danger is engaged and darkens our future. Uncertainties regarding the future and the fragility of everyday life compromise the power of many of us to live. France, once rich in its industry and public services, must reinvest them. The Republic, protecting our freedoms, is weakening in its task of collective and individual emancipation and reduction of inequalities, particularly in education and training. You know it, and yet we see the dead end.

These emergencies have awakened our consciousness for a long time; they alert us to the absence of adequate decisions, particularly with regard to young people, the first social victims of the pandemic; they are the basis of our commitments and our struggles; they also oblige us by bringing us back to our convergences. Of course, we have differences. But we, we believe that they are not so deep to leave the field free to exercise the responsibilities of the power in place, to the Republicans party, or even worse, to the extreme right.

You look your own way too much

For months, many French women and men have called for the union of the left and environmentalists. Polls and initiatives follow one another. Some of you have proposed discussions, processes for developing a common program and shared governance, building a popular bloc or participating in a primary. Citizens, but also officials from each of your parties advocate this gathering around strong values and commons to invent the future: equality, social and environmental justice, democratic transformation. You know this, and yet for us you look your own way too much.

“Do not take it badly, but these five years ahead of us are above all decisive for our generation”

Despite this, we, the young people of this country, still believe in it. We believe in it because we perceive the expectations within our families, our towns and villages, our neighborhoods. We believe in it because we want local public services, a secure and sustainable future, a more peaceful society, because it is more open to the success of each and everyone. We believe in it because we want economic security for the most vulnerable and tax justice. We believe in it because we want to make our Republic evolve in order to twist the necks of the inequalities that undermine it and bring democracy to all levels. Time is running out to initiate this necessary and radical bifurcation.
