An actor whose face has been reflected since middle school got married before he knew it and became a married woman. As she ran frantically, she felt skepticism and fear regarding her celebrity life, which she thought was her vocation. Fifteen years following her debut, her interest in her profession as an actress flared up once more. This is a story regarding actress Lee Yeon-hee, who showed a new side of herself through ‘Race’.
The Disney+ original series ‘Race’ (script Kim Ruri, director Lee Dong-yoon) is a drama regarding Park Yoon-jo, who has no qualifications but joins a large company with passion, gets caught up in a recruitment scandal and struggles to survive in a variety of work life.
Lee Yeon-hee takes on the role of Park Yoon-jo, a marketer who has nothing to offer, such as academic background or family, but is serious regarding his work. Park Yoon-jo, who was working at a public relations agency, joined the Public Relations Team 3 of the Business Strategy Headquarters through a spec-out screening.
The plot, in which the main character, who puts passion ahead of specs, grows while going through various things at the company, reminds me of the popular ‘Misaeng’ in the past. After the scenario of ‘Race’ was released, many people compared it to ‘Misaeng’.
“I think it’s because a lot of people think of ‘Misaeng’ when they think of office water. After watching ‘Race’, they said that it was fun in itself rather than saying that it reminded them of other office water. I want to lead and stand tall as ‘Race’ itself.”
One of the characteristics that differentiates ‘Race’ from other office products is Yoonjo’s personality. Yoon-jo, born in the 1990s, brushes it off with his friends and prepares for tomorrow, even if he goes through difficult and unfair things. He is a so-called ‘candy-type’ protagonist, which is hard to see in existing office waters.
“Even though Yoonjo was born in the 90s, there are aspects of him that don’t seem like friends these days. Actually, the office water itself has a lot of reality, so if it looked too realistic, I thought the drama would become heavy. We have light parts, and there are parts where three friends gather and think ‘let’s play and solve’. In fact, the younger generation Just as I had a friend who grew up early and looked at society rationally, I just understood Yoonjo.”
Lee Yeon-hee, who had never experienced corporate life, prepared the character Park Yoon-jo through various advice and materials. At the same time, I became curious regarding the field of publicity, and the attitude of promoting her work changed.
“There is a PR team around, but I didn’t know exactly what they were doing, so I asked the writer for the data. I received a lot of help from reading the books recommended by the publicists. I wondered if it was. I felt a great sense of accomplishment when I made a brand and let a lot of people know regarding it. When I asked, ‘How are you?’, I thought that if PR goes well, I must do it unconditionally.”
Lee Yeon-hee, who started acting in the 2004 drama ‘Haesin’, has already reached her 20th year. She has been steadily working on her work, but Lee Yeon-hee, who lives as an actress, was rather intimidated by the interest and attention that followed her, she frankly confessed.
“When I was young, I liked to dance in front of others and show off my talents, but there were times when I was rather afraid of receiving attention while doing this job. I thought that I was not born to do this job. But for 10 years, I think I just ran like crazy. It’s a job that requires effort, and experience made me, and I also wondered if I had the ability. I think I worked without thinking for 15 years. I was interested in it as a job and it was right I’ve been thinking regarding it for regarding 4-5 years? I don’t think it’s been that long.”
The change in Lee Yeon-hee’s attitude towards acting and the profession of an actor was the play ‘King Lear’, which was presented in 2021. At that time, Lee Yeon-hee took on the role of a clown in ‘King Lear’ and stepped onto the stage for the first time. And through this, Lee Yeon-hee was able to rediscover the joy of her acting.
“Before that, I was constantly running and worrying regarding whether I was right or not, but when I acted in a play, I think I went back to when I first liked acting and wanted to do it. It was just thrilling and fun.
As I enjoyed acting, I naturally developed a desire for various works. The biggest criterion for Lee Yeon-hee’s selection of works is ‘sympathy’, but she did not hesitate to make an unconventional transformation like a villain. Through this, she also developed a desire to be recognized by those who watched her acting.
“Now, when it comes to choosing a work, I think I choose works that I can understand and sympathize with. I want to try works that reflect reality. Works that express people around me or neighbors, or works that express subtle emotions. I want to try it. Also, I look good, but if I play a villain, I think it will be fun because there is a twist. I want to express my role well and become a ‘trustworthy treasure’ to everyone.”
‘Race’, which was released on the 10th, has only 6 episodes released yet. Yoon-jo, who joined the company through spec-out, is set to go through many ordeals as the recruitment corruption scandal breaks out. Lee Yeon-hee foreshadowed Yoon-jo’s change through her work and asked for a lot of viewing.
“Yoonjo is starting to speak out more and more in a large company that is being suppressed. I hope you will see what the changes will be like. And as each episode goes on, each character, including Yoonjo, Jaemin, Guijeong, and Song team leader, is explained. .Just as location makes a person, everyone has their own concerns. I hope everyone will sympathize with and comfort the hardships at work without being biased.”
