Lee Jae-myeong, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, attended the plenary session of the National Assembly on the 6th to participate in the vote on ‘fast-track designation of the Special Prosecutor Chae Act.’ This was his first time attending the National Assembly since being admitted to Green Hospital due to the followingmath of his hunger strike.

Representative Lee, who was at Green Hospital, took a taxi and got off in front of the National Assembly headquarters around 5:30 pm that day. Representative Lee held on to his cane and headed to the plenary session, escorted by party leader Chun Jun-ho’s chief of staff, Secretary General Cho Jung-sik, and others. He did not answer questions from reporters asking why he attended the vote, when he would return to his duties, and his position on the theory of disciplinary action for those who voted.

Representative Lee exchanged greetings surrounded by Democratic Party members in the plenary room. Some lawmakers even took pictures with Representative Lee. After voting on the fast-track designation of the Corporal Chae Special Prosecutor Act, Representative Lee left the plenary room before the voting results were announced. He remained in the National Assembly for 27 minutes. Representative Lee said, “My health is still not good enough to attend another vote.”

Representative Lee met with reporters as he left the plenary room and said, “It seems like the voter turnout for the Gangseo-gu mayor is low,” and added, “I hope that many people participate in the by-election and show us what the public sentiment is and what the people’s will is.”

The Democratic Party has been focusing its efforts on fast-tracking the Special Prosecutor Chae Act. The requirement for fast-track designation requires the approval of 179 members, or three-fifths of the registered members, so it is difficult to pass with only the number of Democratic Party seats (168). Accordingly, it appears that Representative Lee, who is hospitalized, came to the plenary room to vote in person. The party representative’s office reported that this was Representative Lee’s first outside event, excluding the fact that he went to the court to review warrants and attend trial while hospitalized.
