He recalled the moment when he almost died, saying, “It was regarding seven years ago.” “I wanted to eat bear eel. It was around 8pm and I mightn’t go alone to eat. I called one of my juniors, an actor named Han Cheol-woo, and said, ‘Let’s eat eel together.’ “Han Cheol-woo willingly came to the eel restaurant in Gangnam.”
Lee Gyeong-gyu said, “The moment I lifted my chopsticks to eat eel with a glass of soju, I fainted. I still remember the moment I fainted. I fell from where I was sitting and hit my head hard enough to make a ‘popping’ sound. I found out later that the lump was this big. The eel flew into the sky and I fell, my chopsticks fell and my head hit. “I was going into a dazed state, and someone ran towards me,” he said, explaining the situation at the time.
“Luckily, an oriental medicine doctor came to the eel house that day. He took my pulse and told me to quickly call 119. While Han Cheol-woo was calling 119, he suddenly felt sick to his stomach. He confessed, “I went to the bathroom for a moment and black stool came out.”

When blood bursts from the stomach, digestion takes place in the stomach. So when stool comes out, black stool comes out. I suffered massive bleeding from my stomach. “That’s why I saw so much black stool and the bleeding got so bad,” he explained.
At that time, when Lee Gyeong-gyu came out of the bathroom, an ambulance had arrived. Lee Gyeong-gyu said, “Because it was Sunday, the ambulance came early. He came running at golden time. In the ambulance, they asked my name and age to check on my mental state. I got in the ambulance and checked my blood pressure, and it was down to 40. It really almost got into big trouble. “I went into the emergency room at Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital, but there was no doctor there that day,” he confessed.
“The intern came. I understand that he came in sick due to bleeding from his stomach, and he said he needed to do a stomach test. It was to see how the bleeding was going, and it really hurt. “It was so painful that I can’t explain it in words,” he said.
The next morning, a gastroscopy was performed normally. Lee Gyeong-gyu said, “I also did a blood test. The normal hemoglobin level is usually 14 to 15, but mine was between 7 and 6. It was a very critical moment where if you made a mistake, you might lose your life. “I had my first blood transfusion,” he said.
“If a stomach ulcer ruptures and gastric juice comes out following eating, the stomach ulcer will not heal. So, you must basically fast for 5 days. I got an IV and went on a fast, but those were really painful days. It was painful to watch mukbang or eating commercials on TV. “I was discharged from the hospital five days later, and little by little I recovered and returned to normal,” he recalled.
Lee Gyeong-gyu said, “The important thing is that if I hadn’t gone to eat eel that day, I would have died on the street. There was no one home that day once more. If I had fallen in the bathroom, I would have died in the bathroom, and what is clear is that I would have died if I had not found a bear eel somewhere. “I still love bear eel,” he emphasized.
