Major General Mahfouz Marzouk, former director of the Naval College, said that the “Deterrence 2024” exercise is unprecedented for several reasons, including that it is the first time that the command center is on one of the naval units at sea; It is the Gamal Abdel Nasser helicopter carrier, to command everything that takes place in the naval, air and land theater of operations at the same time.
He explained in statements on the On My Responsibility program, broadcast on Sada El Balad channel, on Tuesday, that with the participation of several weapons in the maneuver, such as land, naval, and air defense forces, he demonstrated the helicopter carrier’s ability to control combat operations in the sea, air, and land domains.
He considered that the aim of the military maneuver was to send a message of deterrence to any potential hostility, and to emphasize the strength and solidity of the Egyptian Armed Forces, as each military unit is equipped at the highest level to carry out tasks with high efficiency and great precision.
He continued: “The message of the maneuver is that we are able to secure our airspace and maritime borders. The armed forces are capable of protecting the land and preserving the capabilities of the nation.”
He stated that the carrier carried helicopters equipped with missiles and anti-submarine and anti-ship fire, in addition to missiles to support ground forces, noting that the current level of equipment and capabilities differs from the past, as the carrier has become able to land ground forces and provide them with air support, while in the past the forces were landing. On land with two companies, one infantry and the other armored only.
He pointed out that the total area that the Egyptian Navy protects in the Mediterranean is 400,000 square kilometers, an area equivalent to 40% of the area of Egypt, which amounts to approximately one million square kilometers.
He stressed that there is “high and significant coordination between the air and naval forces to strike and hit targets accurately and carry out the operation with great efficiency,” and that “there is high security during the military exercise Deterrence 2024, which reflects the pinnacle of training and combat professionalism of the Egyptian Armed Forces.”
