The head of the Free Patriotic Movement, Representative Gebran Bassil, confirmed during a conference on the Syrian displacement in Byblos that, “Lebanon is the first in the world in terms of the intensity of displacement, and in terms of the emigration of its children, and this is a situation that a country with its society and resources like Lebanon cannot tolerate.”

He added, “It is true that our crisis regarding displacement is existential and existential, but its effects are social, economic and demographic, and the last thing is the sectarian standard, as Christian regions are affected much less than other regions, but does this mean that we do not release our humanitarian cry on this issue?”

He continued, “The displaced Syrian is a victim and the Lebanese host is a victim, and therefore we will not abandon two peoples, but the crisis at the beginning requires treatment from us, and it is wrong to expect solutions from outside only.”

Bassil indicated that, “During the era of President Aoun, 450,000 displaced Syrians returned, but no one talks regarding the issue, and no report has been issued regarding a name or an incident they were exposed to there, and this is what I ask every ambassador who asks me regarding the issue.”

And he continued, “It is true that 450,000 returned, but it is unfortunate that the number of Syrians has increased in Lebanon due to births, and when I warned regarding this matter, and regarding the issue of the obligation to register, so that unregistered children do not turn into unregistered persons upon family reunification, some newspapers described me in 2011 with the worst descriptions.” “.

He pointed out, “The great tragedy in the issue of displacement is in Lebanon. The government in the person of its Prime Minister Najib Mikati in 2011 and today is the biggest accomplice to Lebanon and the Lebanese in the file of displacement through complete obedience to the external will. They are talking regarding the matter to create a state of loss among the people. did they work?!

Bassil explained, “The displaced today are of three categories: The first category, as soon as we obtain the data from the UNHCR, international law can be applied in its regard, so that every displaced person whose name comes to it loses his status of displacement if he is able to move between the two countries.”

He added, “When I was Minister of Foreign Affairs, I signed a memorandum with the UNHCR to hand over the data, but at that time they refused to hand it over to General Security on the grounds that it had a good relationship with the Syrian regime, and they preferred to hand it over to the Ministry of Affairs because the minister was not on good terms with the regime, and in the end they handed over the data along with the code so that it cannot be viewed.” on all information.

He said, “Today they set nine conditions for handing over the data, including granting residency to all the displaced in Lebanon. Silence on this matter is not negligence or complicity on the part of the government?”

He added, “We know that our words regarding the issue of displacement do not affect the prime minister. What affects is the credit card.”

And he continued, “We hope that this conference will produce joint municipal action with the mayors, and we are acting as deputies and always under a humanitarian pretext keen on the third part of the displaced who must return with their security and dignity, but who are unable, perhaps because of the destruction of their homes or because their areas are not safe like Idlib, and it is our duty to do so.” Helping them, as well as the duty of their state and the international community, to achieve a gradual, not immediate, return that can be absorbed by the Syrian state.
