Lebanon’s demographic crises | Dr.. Khalil Hussein

The geographical and demographic factors in the Lebanese reality have always constituted countless crises, and one of the simplest issues is to find complex and intertwined crises where external and internal elements mix to form strong influences on the reality of the crisis regime, which is already filled with prolonged and continuous crises since its inception to the present day.

The latest manifestations of demographic issues are what has been raised regarding the Syrian displacement and asylum in Lebanon, which has become, with official confirmation recently, through Prime Minister-designate Najib Mikati, who asked the international community to help return the displaced Syrians to safe areas, and these demands did not stop at this point, the matter was raised At the meeting of the Council of Arab Foreign Ministers held in Lebanon last week, which did not reach practical, feasible solutions, hinting at the difficulty of the matter in these circumstances.

In fact, there is a real problem that Lebanon is currently going through, which is the pressures arising from the Syrian exodus, which has become a challenge related to many economic and social aspects, including the demographic nature of Lebanon. The issue of Syrian displacement in Lebanon has many aspects, some of which are difficult to solve, especially the issue related to numbers and the nature of its presence in various regions. So far, there are no accurate figures officially agreed upon through the United Nations or the competent Lebanese authorities, in addition to the perpetual entry and exit from and to Lebanon, as it is difficult to count the numbers accurately in order to follow up and find solutions. Neither the international institutions are actually interested in searching for appropriate means of return, nor in terms of following up on the requirements of existence, which have become very expensive for the Lebanese reality in crisis in the first place.

Although there are no accurate official figures, there is information that intersects with many reliable sources, that the numbers in total exceeded one-third of the number of the Lebanese people, and there are those who say that it has reached half, which is a big dilemma that it is difficult for Lebanon to digest and accept under any circumstance. Circumstances. The demographic reality suffers from many imbalances and distortions in terms of human, sectarian or sectarian distribution, in addition to the impact related to the Palestinian presence since 1948, in addition to the successive migrations following 1969, leading to the results of the Syrian crisis and the exodus of many Palestinians from Syria to Lebanon.

What made matters worse is the economic aspect of the issue, as Lebanon suffers from the worst economic and financial conditions in its modern and contemporary history, as pressure on the services provided by Lebanese official facilities and institutions has become very high and huge levels in light of the scarcity of international aid and the inability of Lebanon, of course, to bear this The increasing attrition, which is already suffering from many difficulties, especially following the year 2019.

In sum, the demographic and demographic reality that Lebanon suffers from, formerly and currently, is related to the entity and the nature of its sensitive structure, which was primarily one of the causes of the sharp vertical division in the Lebanese political life, which was a direct cause of the conflicts and encroaching civil wars, and the current economic conditions come To reformulate the problem in terms of the aid provided by international institutions to Lebanon, which is very little aid, under enormous socio-economic pressure.

What was raised at the meeting of Arab foreign ministers last week, shows a bleak picture of the current reality, where there are no executable procedural proposals, not even visions for the near or distant future, and thus there is an existing problem whose social and economic repercussions and effects will increase, and there are those who also add security repercussions, which are The most sensitive and influential problem in the Lebanese reality, which certainly does not lack more tragedies.
