The Israeli operation was carried out following intelligence that Hezbollah was ready to launch a large-scale attack on the Jewish state at 5 a.m. local time. The Israeli preemptive strike, which was carried out at 4:45 a.m., according to Israeli media, was followed by the launching of hundreds of rockets by the pro-Iranian Lebanese Shiite group. According to Hezbollah, more than 320 rockets were fired at Israeli military bases and sites. The IDF later reported 210 rockets, as well as about 20 drones, coming from southern Lebanon. A senior Israel Defense Forces (IDF) source quoted by Channel 12 as saying that the pro-Iranian Lebanese Shiite party was ready to launch 6,000 rockets at Israel.

The IDF’s international spokesman, Lt. Col. Nadav Shoshani, stressed that “Hezbollah’s attacks were a partial execution of the large-scale attack they were planning, which was minimized.” According to Israeli security sources, one of the pro-Iranian Shiite group’s failed targets was the Giliot base, located near Herzliya, north of Tel Aviv, where the Mossad headquarters and several units of the elite intelligence corps are located. Hezbollah said it launched the massive attack as part of the “first phase” of retaliation for the death of senior commander Fouad Shukr, who was killed in an Israeli air strike in the southern suburbs of Beirut on July 30.
