The Indicator Committee agreed to raise the minimum wage from 9 to 18 million liras, which is declared for social security and included in the salary. It was also agreed to increase school scholarships in public and private schools.

In this context, the economic expert and member of the Economic, Social and Environmental Council, Anis Abu Diab, said in an interview with “Lebanon Debate” that “in reality, raising the minimum wage to 18 million pounds is a very weak amount because the decent standard of living in Lebanon requires more, and it is not enough.” For a family of 4 people.

He explains that “the reasonable minimum for a family consisting of 4 people requires an average of $700 per month in order for this family to be able to secure its living needs, but in general in Lebanon historically and even today, in order for a family consisting of 4 people to be able to live, it needs two minimum wages.”

He believes that “during this stage, the minimum wage should not be less than $350 per month, but in the end an agreement was reached between the economic bodies and the General Labor Union on this amount, and it is a good step that is better than nothing.”

He points out that “this matter had to be achieved in order for the citizen’s purchasing power to improve, even by a small percentage, and for security contributions to increase, but security must react to this matter by raising the rates of social contributions.”

Abu Diab points out, “The black parallel economy must be controlled. The parallel economy cannot be used as a permanent excuse. Therefore, the political authority must take a decisive decision to reduce the parallel economy so that citizens can live, because it cannot continue under these circumstances.”
