The head of the Bekaa Farmers’ Association, Ibrahim Tarshishi, confirms that “we are going through a real state of war, and it seems that the fate of the Lebanese farmer has become to live in constant anxiety and not feel reassured and stable. However, despite this, the farmer has no choice but to continue doing his work, taking care of his land, and supplying the local markets with his products.” .

In an interview with Lebanon Debate, Tarshishi touched on the export problem, which greatly affects the agricultural sector, noting that “the agricultural sector will face a major catastrophe on May 1 if things continue like this, especially since the security situation in the Red Sea is dangerous.” “Ships cannot go to our waters to load Lebanese goods and crops, and Saudi markets are closed to Lebanese agricultural exports, so we hope that the war will end before May.”

Regarding the prices of vegetables during the holy month of Ramadan, Tarshishi explains, “All types of vegetables will be available in the markets at acceptable prices starting Thursday. This is due to the high temperatures, which increases the production rate to meet the high demand for vegetables.”

He points out that “vegetable prices witnessed an increase in the past due to the decrease in the production rate and due to the cold weather, in addition to the demand and rush to buy agricultural products during the time of fasting, which led to an increase in prices, knowing that prices during the last period did not rise much, except by 5% or 10%.” “.
