Lebanon Calls for Enhanced Response to Israeli Hostilities

Beirut – Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati called on the UN Security Council on Monday to “take more effective and decisive measures to address Israeli violations and attacks on Lebanese civilians.”

This came during a meeting at the Government Palace (the government headquarters) in central Beirut, which brought together Mikati with ambassadors and chargés d’affaires of embassies of member states of the UN Security Council, according to a statement by the media office of the Lebanese Prime Minister.

According to a statement from Mikati’s office, the meeting was attended by Chinese Ambassador Qian Mengjian, British Chargé d’Affaires Victoria Dunne, US Chargé d’Affaires Amanda Beals, Russian Chargé d’Affaires Maxim Ramanov, and French Chargé d’Affaires Bruno Pereira da Silva.

The meeting was also attended by the Ambassadors of Switzerland Marion Weichelt, Korea Il Park, Japan Maguchi Masayuki, Algeria Rachid Belbaki, the European Union Sandra de Waal, the UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, and the Deputy UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon Imran Riza.

Mikati stressed the “need for the UN Security Council to take more effective and decisive measures to address Israeli violations and attacks on Lebanese civilians.”

He considered that “the Security Council’s response must be quick and strong, and aim to protect innocent civilians and civil defense personnel, who are doing their utmost to alleviate the suffering of civilians.”

On Saturday, 3 firefighters were killed and 2 others were injured when an Israeli drone bombed a civil defense fire truck in southern Lebanon.

Mikati expressed his country’s “strong condemnation of the continued Israeli targeting of Lebanese civilians, which constitutes a clear violation of international law and a threat to the safety and security of the Lebanese people.”

He called on the Security Council to “assume its responsibility to maintain international law and security, by holding accountable those responsible for targeting Lebanese civilians.”
