On Friday, Lebanon accused Israel of “jamming” the navigation systems at Beirut Airport since the start of the war on the Gaza Strip, and announced that it had filed a complaint with the UN Security Council.

There has been an almost daily exchange of shelling on the Lebanese-Israeli border between the Lebanese Hezbollah, which supports its ally Hamas, and the Israeli army, since the outbreak of war between Israel and the movement in Gaza on October 7.

These clashes raise fears of an expansion of the escalation regionally, while anxiety is growing in Lebanon.

The Lebanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced in a statement that it had instructed Lebanon’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York to “submit an urgent complaint to the UN Security Council regarding Israel’s attacks on Lebanese sovereignty by disrupting navigation systems and civil aviation safety in the airspace of Rafic Hariri International Airport – Beirut, since The start of the war on Gaza.

The Lebanese Foreign Ministry stated that “this complaint came as a continuation of the campaign to document Israeli violations and violations, and a continuation of the series of complaints filed previously, as Lebanon denounces these Israeli actions that are characterized by the described recklessness” and “their dangerous consequences on the safety of civil aviation, as well as on the lives of thousands of civilian passengers daily, in A flagrant violation of the laws and regulations sponsored by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the International Air Transport Association (IATA), as well as the International Civil Aviation Convention signed in Chicago in 1944, in addition to international humanitarian law.”

Last January, the departure and arrival screens at Beirut Airport were subjected to a cyber attack, and local media circulated footage showing an anti-Hezbollah message on the screens in the airport building.

Since the start of the war in the Gaza Strip, at least 323 people have been killed in Lebanon, most of them pro-Iranian Hezbollah fighters, including 56 civilians, according to a tally prepared by Agence France-Presse.

At least 10 soldiers and 7 civilians were killed on the Israeli side, according to official data.
