“Lebanese Debate”
The political forces in Lebanon differed in reading the final statement issued by the Five-Year Committee. The opposition party considered it as a support for its positions, due to its neglect of talking regarding dialogue, while the other party seemed annoyed by the statement.
Former Interior Minister Marwan Charbel believes that “the statement of the five-year committee did not produce any positive result. We do not need sermons and threats. They should help us elect a president for the republic.”
Charbel adds, “The statement only gave the characteristics of the president of the republic, and we know that there is difficulty in naming the outside the president of the republic, as he must be elected from within and approved from abroad, not the other way around.”
He explained in an interview with the “Lebanese Debate”, that “the members of the five-member committee were not in agreement with each other, as Saudi Arabia does not want to interfere in the presidential file, and France is known to which side it leans, and Qatar and America have a clear position, and we must not forget Iran, which is the largest player and which I was excluded from this meeting, and accordingly, Charbel considers that in light of this atmosphere, the five-member committee reached an ineffective formula.
Charbel touches on “the division in the House of Representatives, as the first section wants dialogue and the second does not.”
Therefore, he points out that “we must first agree on dialogue, and if we do not reach a result, we go to the elections, otherwise there is no other solution,” noting that “a bilateral dialogue table must be held between the most objecting to reach an agreement,” expecting that “it will continue The presidential stalemate period is until September, and it may extend to the end of 2023.
On the security level, Charbel rules out the occurrence of “any security incidents during the coming period, because the security services deal with any imbalance despite the living conditions that their members, who have so far contributed to the existence of the state, are going through.”
As for the economic level and the expected scenario with the end of the term of the Governor of the Banque du Liban nearing the end, Charbel believes that “if the state is able to act in a correct scientific and financial manner until the election of a president for the republic, there is no fear that the exchange rate of the dollar will escape.”
At the end of his speech, he touches on the issue of “the process of starting the excavation work,” as he points out to “the important positive that can be achieved from the process of starting the excavation work during the month of September, which will reflect positively on the economy, even if it is psychological, it will help in its recovery.”
