Lebanese-Israeli Border Escalation: The Threat of War Looming

The Lebanese-Israeli border front flared up on October 8, that is, one day following the outbreak of the Gaza War. Over the past weeks, this front has remained governed by what looks like a calculated escalation, but indicators appeared on Saturday indicating the possibility of a war or major clash erupting on this front.

The first raid deep inside Lebanon

On Saturday morning, Israel launched its first raid deep into Lebanon since the start of the bombing exchange with Hezbollah and the Palestinian factions.

The raid, which took place in the Al-Zahrani area, targeted a truck that was parked in a banana field.

The location of the raid was 40 kilometers from the border with Israel.

Observers viewed the raid as a major escalation by Israel in its clashes with Hezbollah, following it had been limited to the border areas.

On Sunday morning, our correspondent reported that an Israeli bombing targeted the Kfar Shuba and Halta heights in the eastern sector of southern Lebanon.

“Hezbollah is close to making a big mistake.”

During a tour of the northern front on the border with Lebanon, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Galant said on Saturday that Hezbollah is close to “committing a big mistake.”

He threatened that this would lead to “turning Beirut into a second Gaza.”

He stated, “Hezbollah is dragging Lebanon into a war that may break out, and it is committing mistakes. If it commits these mistakes here, those who will pay the price first are the citizens of Lebanon, and what we are doing in Gaza we know how to repeat in Beirut.”

He considered that “Hezbollah’s provocations turned into attacks.”

“War is approaching us”

The Secretary-General of the Lebanese Hezbollah, Hassan Nasrallah, gave a speech on Saturday, which his supporters watched on screens, in which he did not explicitly threaten to expand operations and wage war once morest Israel.

But he linked stopping the current operations once morest Israel and American forces in the region to stopping the war on the Gaza Strip.

As for the British newspaper The Times, it quoted a military leader in the party, which did not reveal his real name, as saying that war was imminent.

The leader, who bore the pseudonym “Ali,” told the newspaper: “I feel that the war is approaching, and it will be here soon.”

The party leader was speaking in a town near the Wadi al-Hujair border, which witnessed battles between the two sides in the 2006 war.

The leader did not care regarding an Israeli drone flying over his head just before dark.

He said: “We are ready to end the final chapter of our war with Israel, if we receive orders.”

He stated that if the party feels that there is a 50 percent chance that Israel will eliminate Hamas, it will go to war once morest Israel.
