The office of the Lebanese Minister of Interior and Municipalities, Bassam Mawlawi, said that “following receiving information regarding the state of chemical warehouses belonging to the Al-Zouk thermal plant, Minister Mawlawi submitted a detailed warning report to the cabinet yesterday, calling for immediate action to remove everything that might cause any danger.”

The statement indicated that “the current security situation of the plant is improper, due to the presence of gaps in the technical fence, and the lack of guarding elements, which allows people to enter its campus, where there are hydrogen and fuel oil tanks, and some expired hazardous materials.”

Al-Mawlawi called on the cabinet to “the necessity of securing guards for the Zouk thermal plant, and all its facilities, until the plant management is able to complete the maintenance work, and assign the Ministry of Energy and Direct Water to dismantle the old plant or empty it of dangerous materials.”

The Council of Ministers decided to assign the army to secure a guard point, inspect the existing materials, and take the necessary measures to prevent any damage that may result from it, and work to move and remove it immediately.

Molloy sent a letter to the Ministry of National Defense requesting that all necessary measures be taken to implement the Cabinet’s decision.
