Learning reading and writing skills through newspapers ~ Utsunomiya

Parents and children had fun learning how to use newspapers

A “Summer Parent-Child Newspaper Class” was held on July 27th at the Yokokawa District Civic Center in Utsunomiya City, where participants learned how to use newspapers to improve their academic performance.

About 20 elementary school students and their parents participated. The lecturer was Takahiro Tanaka, a former principal of a public elementary school in Tokyo and an advisor to the Yomiuri Shimbun Education Network, who is working on learning using newspapers. Advisor Tanaka stressed the importance of obtaining accurate information through newspapers and taught how parents and children can learn together using the Yomiuri Shimbun. After listening to Advisor Tanaka’s explanation, the children enjoyed a game of searching for people’s names and place names in the morning edition of the Yomiuri Shimbun, and then flipped through the newspaper to enjoy absorbing new news and knowledge.

The theme of the second half was “How to write sentences that convey meaning.” Advisor Tanaka explained the trick to writing easy-to-understand sentences, referring to newspaper articles. The participating children wrote in detail about the atmosphere at the venue and the contents of the lecture, and each child completed their own composition. Kana Kawabe, a second-grader at Ishii Municipal Elementary School, who regularly reads the Yomiuri KODOMO Newspaper, said with a smile, “The adult newspaper was a little difficult, but I was drawn in by the headlines and photos, so I enjoyed reading it.”
