Learn what the Real ID Express is in the US and what it is used for

Real ID Express is an expedited option for obtaining a Real ID in the US with higher standards.

The document or card is the updated version of the identification, with greater security.

The REAL ID Act, passed by Congress in 2005, was designed to implement a recommendation of the 9/11 Commission.

The aim is to improve the security of identification documents, particularly driving licences and identity cards issued by States.

Real ID Express allows U.S. residents to obtain a driver’s license or ID card more quickly than the normal process.

With Real ID Express, applicants can provide identification documents in person at a DMV office and get their Real ID the same day.

This expedited option is useful for those who need an ID urgently, for example, to travel by air within the US following their expiration date.

Real ID Express is usually an additional cost compared to the regular process of obtaining a Real ID.

Additionally, this identification is used or required to access government buildings, courts, military installations or nuclear plants.

Entry into force

Beginning May 7, 2025, a Real ID will be required to travel within the U.S. or enter government buildings.

The process for obtaining a REAL ID is simple. Simply visit the website of the driver’s license agency in the state in which you reside.

Requirements to obtain the Real ID

Documents are usually required that include your full name, date of birth, social security number, proof of residency and legal status.

Each state may establish other requirements. Once all of them are met, the applicant will receive a valid REAL ID card.

Cards will be issued in all states, the District of Columbia, and the five U.S. territories.

Details to recognize a Real ID

The cards will have one of five legal marks at the top.

If the card does not have this mark, it will not be accepted as proof of identity.

The markings are: a five-point star in gold, a black five-point star, a white star surrounded by a gold circle.

Also a white star surrounded by a black circle and the figure of a bear in gold with a white star on its back.
